Fungal diseases in dogs and cats in Northeastern Brazil

ABSTRACT: In this retrospective study, the clinical and anatomopathological findings of fungal diseases in dogs cats Northeastern Brazil are described. During study period, 6,827 histopathological examinations (4,090 necropsies 2,737 biopsies) companion animals were reviewed, infections diagnosed 54 cases. Of these, 32 cases 22 dogs. Sporotrichosis was most prevalent mycosis (19/54), followed by dermatophytosis (9/54), cryptococcosis (8/54), candidiasis (7/54), phaeohyphomycosis (4/54). Other had two each, including aspergillosis, mucormycosis, histoplasmosis, whereas coccidioidomycosis occurred once. Mycoses through microscopic lesions associated with histomorphological characteristics agent, as evidenced routine special histochemical stains. They occasionally confirmed immunohistochemistry microbiological cultivation. This showed that despite being uncommon, important causes death region, affected species sporotrichosis mycosis. Clinical signs correlated portal entry infection localized or disseminated superficial deep skin affecting parenchymal organs, especially systemic infections. Microscopic mainly characterized pyogranulomatous inflammation structures. dogs, mycoses owing to an immunological impairment secondary canine distemper virus co-infection.
